Gujarat University's move to discontinue services of more than 40 people who were hired on the post after their retirement has led to resentment with some stakeholders criticising the move. The varsity's move, aimed at bringing fresh and young talent, is also being criticised on the grounds that those affected are mostly lower and mid-level employees even as GU continues to appoint retired seniors to important posts such as head of the Estate and Account Department as well as CEO of GUSEC.The circular issued by the varsity on Tuesday said all such employees working in the department's administrative work profile were being immediately relieved from their jobs with immediate effect."These are employees who had meagre salaries which supported their families. If the norm is not to have retired employees working at GU then it needs to be a blanket implementation as those brought from outside after their retirement will also have to go. This elitist approach to sack some employees and retain others is unfair," said an official.VC Neerja Gupta however said the move is aimed at bringing new recruits. "Some of the employees were holding the work and post for too long after retirement. If we want new people to join, we need to have an idea about recruitment statistics and hence the move," she said.
