The Gujarat University (GU) on Monday terminated the services of Kamaljit Lakhtaria, Associate Professor and former coordinator of the Higher Payment Program (HPP) for corruption. The decision was taken after Lakhtaria failed to respond to two show-cause notices and after the GU got a nod from its highest decision-making body - the Board of Management (BoM).Lakhtaria is accused of Rs16 crore corruption while coordinating the HPP. He allegedly transferred the money to a relative's accounts and also overpaid the third party involved in running the HPP. An inquiry launched under a retired judge found Lakhtaria guilty of corruption. Following the inquiry report, a show-cause notice was issued to Lakhtaria twice to give him a chance to explain his side."We have decided to terminate his services at GU after taking stock of the situation and serving him show-cause notices. We will also file a police complaint against Lakhtaria for charges of corruption and others," said V-C Neerja Gupta.Lakhtaria and others are also allegedly involved in a CCC exam scam in which alleged payments were made to improve the CCC exam score. However, the GU is yet to initiate a detailed probe in the case. The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) had also probed similar allegations and found one of its employees guilty.
