Justice DM Desai of the Gujarat High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition filed by two candidates who wanted to contest the elections for the Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank.The HC dismissed the petition at the admission stage itself as the two aspiring candidates were not eligible to contest the polls.Earlier the HC had issued notices to the bank, the central government, the state government and others in response to a petition filed by Kalpak Maniar and Mayank Maniar whose candidatures were rejected by the Returning Officer.The election of the Rajkot-based Urban Scheduled Bank became a high-profile contest after BJP stalwart Surendra Patel alias Kaka emerged as one of the candidates for the post of chairman.The elections will be held on November 17 but further steps in the polls will be subject to the outcome of the pleas filed by the candidates.The Maniars moved the HC and sought urgent intervention from the court after their nominations were rejected on November 9 on the grounds that they were members of other urban cooperative bodies.The petitioners submitted that such grounds for rejection were vague and frivolous and their forms should be accepted.
