Actor Joaquin Phoenix says Christopher Nolan had reached out to him to play the Joker in his 2008 film The Dark Knight but the actor "wasn't ready" to play the Batman supervillain then.
Actor Heath Ledger eventually played the Joker opposite Christian Bale as The Dark Knight in the second movie of Nolan's Batman trilogy. Ledger, who died six months before the release of the film, won the best supporting actor Oscar posthumously for his stellar performance.
