Single-use plastic takes around 500 years to decompose. And, according to an estimate, the food industry alone is responsible for generation of nearly 35% of such plastic waste. With the aim to find an alternative, a team of students from Nirma University (NU) students came up with bioplastic made using corn starch, vinegar, stearic acid and laminate over both sides of a sheet of recycled paper. The product was named BioCastic, and its makers walked away with the first prize in the Hackathon 6.0.
