When Lakshmi Keswani first visited Ahmedabad in 2010 as a child to stay with her paternal aunts, she was struck by the sight of women moving freely around the city, even late at night, and the commonplace sight of women riding scooters.
It was a delightful surprise, as she couldn't imagine herself or her two elder sisters doing the same in their hometown of Pir Jo Goth in Sukkur, Sindh province, Pakistan, where they were born and raised. Her grandfather, father, and uncles had lived there since Partition.
New chapter
Fast forward to 2024, and Lakshmi is now enrolled in one of the oldest science colleges in the city, MG Science Institute, pursuing a BSc in microbiology.
She is the first student from Pakistan to be admitted to MGIS and third such student in GU-affiliated colleges.
