Smile-changing filters were used to either align or misalign the smiles of volunteers taking part in video-based speed-dating sessions.
They were part of an investigation into social signals that influence the beginnings of romantic attraction.
The filters used were similar to those already available for social media apps such as Instagram and Tik Tok, but researchers said they were more realistic and unnoticeable to the participants.
None of the volunteers knew their smiles were being manipulated during the experiment.
