PRISON chiefs have announced action over drone-delivered drugs and a giant rat infestation at a jail that has housed some of Britain's most notorious killers.

'Catastrophic levels' of drugs, violence and rats blight prison

The Inspectorate of Prisons found HMP Manchester, also known as Strangeways, had "catastrophic" levels of drugs, organised crime, high rates of violence and a rat problem.

An action plan includes a new CCTV system and netting to combat drones dropping contraband into the jail. Specialist staff will be appointed to better spot prisoners at risk of selfharm and give officers new training to manage violent offenders.

Revamp

Meanwhile, a new pest control strategy is being put in place and a team has been created to address urgent repairs.
