The British No3 had the crowd behind her all the way as she beat Belgian Elise Mertens, 6-1 6-2 on court No1.

And the 21-year-old, who now goes forward in the tennis tournament with fellow Brit player Sonay Kartal, told fans she was thrilled to have reached her first third round in major competition since she won the US Open in 2021.

Emma said: “It makes me feel unbelievable. I feel so welcome here and obviously Court One is my favourite court.

“I think I played some really good tennis. I’m over the moon to be playing and just to extend my stay – but I want more days.

With the roof closed it was super loud and I’m really grateful and appreciative for everyone making a lot of noise.

“I think the most important thing is focusing on myself. I took care of my business and what I needed to do.
