Mohamed Amra, 30, is now on the run with the attackers after a bloodbath close to the town of Val-de-Reuil in Normandy.
Police have launched a nationwide manhunt for Amra - alleged to be a druglord known as The Fly and his accomplices.
Automatic gunfire was heard at around 11am at the Incarville toll booth on the A154, around an hour's drive from Paris.
