HUNDREDS of flood victims remained missing last night as the death toll in Spain leapt above 200.

An army of civilian volunteers equipped with shovels plus much-needed food and drinking water joined soldiers and emergency crews to tackle carnage caused by the worst floods in Europe in years.

Thousands made their way on foot to the hardest-hit areas of Valencia, on what was a national holiday, as shell-shocked city residents queued for supplies amid piles of wrecked vehicles.

Guillermo Garcia and his father Herman, 52, summed up the mood while walking to the southern district of Sedavi with a tub of tools plus blankets, coffee and milk.

Guillermo, 20, a student who lives in the centre of Spain's third-biggest city, said: "We have been lucky, but we want to help those less fortunate. We are all people, we have to help each other.
