More than 300 air strikes hit targets across the country, including key army and air force bases and chemical weapons plants.
Meanwhile, warships armed with anti-ship missiles wiped out the Syrian naval fleet, according to Israel.
A military spokesman said: "Many Syrian naval vessels carrying dozens of sea-to-sea missiles were destroyed in the Mina al-Bayda area and the port of Latakia." Israel's mission was to stop the Syrian fleet's assets "falling into the hands of hostile elements", he added.
Buildings hit by air strikes included a research hub on the outskirts of the capital Damascas and a centre for electronic warfare near Sayeda Zainab.
