LEGENDARY rock ’n’ roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis died yesterday aged 87.
The singer and piano player, known for his smash 1957 hit song Great Balls Of Fire, died at home in Memphis, Tennessee.
Jerry was equally as famous for his chaotic private life and seven marriages, including one to his 13-year-old cousin Myra Gale Brown.
The news of his passing came two days after incorrect reports stating he had died, sparking a premature outpouring of grief.
The star’s representative Zach Farnum confirmed the news yesterday. He said: “Lewis, perhaps the last true, great icon of the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, whose marriage of blues, gospel, country, honky- tonk and raw, pounding stage performances so threatened a young Elvis Presley that it made him cry, has died.
