Prominent lawyer Doug Emhoff said his 16-year marriage to movie producer Kerstin, 57, ended after he cheated on her with Najen Naylor a teacher at their children's school.
The bombshell came as Vice-President Ms Harris overtook Republican rival Donald Trump in polls in the US presidential race.
As details of the affair emerged, Mr Trump took to a stage to address supporters in the battleground state of Georgia.
Mr Emhoff, 59, later said in a statement: "During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions.
