Health challenges have reached "historic proportions", the Institute for Public Policy Research said.
Researchers point to a stark rise in people missing from the workplace since 2020, which they warn may grow significantly higher.
They found 900,000 more employees were long-term sick compared with what would have expected had pre-2020 absence trends continued.
