HUNDREDS of schools closed yesterday as snow hit parts of the UK - and there is weekend chaos to come when Storm Bert barrels in.

Storm Bert sweeps in as snow shuts schools

It is expected to arrive tomorrow with "heavy rain, strong winds and disruptive snow".

The Met Office warned of potential flooding, and travel disruption and power cuts and said some rural communities could be stranded.

There is an amber alert for heavy snow and ice from 7am to 5pm north of Scotland's central belt tomorrow, where 4-8in is likely on ground above 200 metres, while hills above 400 metres could have as much as 8-15in.
