War hero who sang ‘There’ll Always Be An England’ after ship was sunk dies aged 99

Reg Bishop spent 16 hours in the water, singing There’ll Always Be An England with his pals to keep spirits up, before he was plucked to safety.

He was among 568 sailors who were rescued after warship HMS Hecla was sunk by torpedoes, with the loss of 281 of his crewmates, on November 11, 1942.

Reg was saved by the crew of the destroyer HMS Venomous, who lowered a scrambling net over the side, and gave him a cup of tea and a shot of rum after he climbed on board.

The father of three, who was described as a “tower of strength” by his family, died at his home in Cawston, Norfolk.
