Just four years ago the average was 20. Now a recycling group says tech, batteries and metal in the devices could be worth &pound;1billion. Scott Butler of Material Focus, which provided the figures, said everyone probably has a "drawer of doom".
It has "cables in there that we don't know what they're for". The top discarded items are remotes, phones and hairdryers.
The group - which runs an electrical recycling campaign estimates over 880 million items lie unused and warns they should never go in the general bin.
Mr Butler said: "If you look at the electricals we're throwing away and we're holding on to, we think over a &pound;1billion in value of 'treasure' is sitting there untapped."
