UKRAINE is prepared to reach a truce with Russia and lose territory in exchange for being promised membership of Nato, President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested for the first time.
His proposed ceasefire deal could be struck if the Ukrainian territory under his control were placed under the military alliance's "umbrella".
With around a fifth of Ukraine currently under Russian control, Mr Zelensky would hope to negotiate the return of occupied land "in a diplomatic way" at a later stage.
The suggestion came in an interview with Sky News in which he discussed incoming US President Donald Trump's claim that he would end the war in days.
