A HAPPY NEW JUR

JURGEN KLOPP admits the prospect of being top of the Premier League on New Year's Day is far more appealing than the misery of starting 2023 as also-rans.

Liverpool were sixth at the end of 2022, their title hopes long gone with leaders Arsenal 15 points ahead of them.

They began 2023 losing at Brentford and then Brighton, conceding six goals in the process, before ending the season fifth, Klopp's only full campaign at Liverpool without Champions League qualification.

Although the German is happy to be two points clear at the top of the table at the halfway point of the title race, he insists the Reds still have a lot of work to do.

"I can't even remember who we played 12 months ago," said the Liverpool boss.

"Brentford, oh, we lost that. I think we were sixth for a few minutes or probably seventh or eighth.
