HURRICANE Beryl was last night swirling towards Jamaica after causing death and destruction elsewhere in the Caribbean.
Residents were told to prepare to evacuate ahead of life-threatening 165mph winds and catastrophic storm surges from the Category 5 hurricane, the most serious rating. Prime Minister Andrew Holness said: "I am encouraging all Jamaicans to take the hurricane as a serious threat."
Beryl formed earlier in the year than any other Category 5 storm in the Atlantic, fuelled by record warm waters.
