TWO workers were taken to hospital for suspected smoke inhalation yesterday after a fire at a shipyard which builds nuclear submarines.Neighbours saw flames and thick smoke pouring from the Devonshire Dock Hall, where the blaze started.Debbie Holliday, 37, who lives opposite, said: "I started to get more concerned when I saw flames on the roof. We just stayed inside and shut the windows. The children slept through."I heard what sounded like fireworks and the alarm and saw bright flashes where the fire was. It lasted 45 minutes." Care home worker Donna Butler, 36, said the fire created "lot of thick black smoke" at the BAE Systems site in Barrow, Cumbria, in the early hours.Police told people to stay indoors and advised drivers to close their windows.They said there was no nuclear risk and firefighters brought the blaze under control. Early indications suggest the cause may have been faulty equipment.BAE Systems said everyone has been accounted for and the two workers have been released from hospital.Shares in the FTSE 100-listed company fell 2% in morning trading.The six-acre hall is the second-largest indoor shipbuilding complex of its kind in Europe. Four Vanguard class submarines were built there.
