A TENNIS ball has been stuck in a cathedral archway for 110 years after what must have been a hurl of a throw.Gilbert Bell lost the ball after he tossed it too high while playing with his brother in 1914.The ball has remained firmly wedged ever since, and staff have no plans to take it down - even during renovation work.Millions of visitors to Lincoln Cathedral pass the item every year, but it has gone relatively unnoticed since the First World War.Since then, four generations of Bells have visited the cathedral to check the ball is still in place. And in 2005, Gilbert's nephew David even wrote a letter asking for it to be returned.Mr Bell, from Diss in Norfolk, said his family - who have been offered free admission to the cathedral in future - worried the ball would be lost if the walls were cleaned. But he added: "We wrote the letter tongue-in-cheek to ask for our ball back. It really tickled us."Every time we go up to Lincoln now, we go and see if it's still there." Jane Cowan, the cathedral's head of conservation, said: "The nature of the materials it is made from is different from the stone, glass and wood we are used to dealing with."But the ideal option would be for us to leave the ball in position. Its story is now integral to that of the cathedral."
