THE erratic jet stream which brought killer blizzards to the US has sparked flood warnings here in Britain.
Heavy and often persistent rain is forecast for the next 48 hours, falling on already sodden ground, and it has led to the Environment Agency issuing three flood warnings and 43 flood alerts.
The areas most at risk are Keswick, Cumbria, and two sea-facing regions of Scarborough, North Yorks.
The Met Office said heavy rain in the South West and South Wales could also bring some flooding and travel disruption. Somerset, West Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire, Bristol, parts of Gloucestershire and South Wales are all in the warning zone.
Meteorologist Simon Partridge said the wet and windy weather was caused by the US bomb cyclone. But he added: "The effect it's having here is nowhere near as dramatic." Today a few brighter intervals are possible in the North. It will be breezy in the South. There will be more of the same tomorrow before things settle on Monday - but only for a day.
The Met Office said there could be 10 days of wet weather in January with a chance of snow.
