But then substitute Jonas Hofmann smuggled his shot from 18 yards through a crowded box and beyond Lukasz Fabianksi, who had been in inspired form.
And in stoppage time another sub, Boniface, headed Hofmann's cross into the bottom corner, taking Leverkusen's remarkable run to 42 games unbeaten.
