A MAJOR victory has been declared in the war against Asian hornets after plucky volunteers caused the number of queens to plummet.Fears have been growing for many years that the invasive insects will use the Channel Islands as a launching pad to invade mainland Britain - with the public enlisted to help stop the spread.Anyone who thought they saw one of the predators was asked to log it online and then volunteers from the Jersey Asian Hornets Group were dispatched to track down the nest and kill the queen. Asian hornets are deadly to native bees, wasps and butterflies.In France, where they have been known to lurk outside bee hives, trapping them, before biting off their heads.There have also been reports of them taking over hives and killing off colonies within as little as three hours.But the action is working as, by May 30, 153 queens had been spotted compared with more than 250 by the same date last year. The achievement has been made possible by the work of around 150 volunteers in the group - with another 350 installing traps on their homes.John De Carteret, founding member of the group, said: "Even though eradication is impossible, it gives us some element of control."
