I can see Kane lifting his first trophy and Southgate taking acclaim as an England legend

Everyone thought he would finally break his duck on German soil when he signed for Bayern Munich last summer. But it didn't happen.

Well, he's got a great chance to finally make the acquaintance of a winner's medal on German soil tomorrow night in Berlin - and it would be bigger than anything he could achieve in club football.

Some people who called up Six-0-Six after the semi-final win against the Dutch said Kane should be dropped for the final.

No chance! Why would Gareth Southgate leave out his captain, his record goalscorer and the joint leading contender for the tournament's Golden Boot? It's true that Kane has not been at his best at Euro 2024, but don't underestimate his value to the side.

When Ollie Watkins came off the bench to score the lastminute winner on Wednesday night, Kane had not just played his part by equalising from the spot in the first half. His physicality, persistence and dogged determination had worn down the opponents.

Watkins took his chance to be the hero superbly - but his sharpness, fresh legs and mobility was all part of Southgate's plan to punish the tiring Oranje back-line. And it worked like a dream.

Whatever happens against Spain in the final - and I'll get to that in a moment Southgate's legacy as England manager is now secure.

Twenty years or so ago, England's natural altitude in major tournaments was the last 16 or the quarter-finals.

Under Southgate, it has become semi-finalists or finalists.
