JK Rowling warned a new hate crime law will end free speech, challenging authorities to arrest her under it.
The Harry Potter author said the law, which took effect in Scotland yesterday, is open to abuse. Police expect a wave of complaints about online posts.
But Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf said it will help protect against a "rising tide" of hatred. The Hate Crime and Public Order Act creates a crime of inciting hatred relating to age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity or being intersex. It carries up to seven years in jail.
Ms Rowling, 58, said: "Freedom of speech and belief are at an end in Scotland if the accurate description of biological sex is deemed criminal."
She posted that it will be impossible to prevent violence against women "unless we are allowed to call a man a man".
She mentioned transgender criminals like Isla Bryson, previously Adam Graham, who was sent to a women's jail for rape, and Samantha Norris, who was jailed for having child abuse images. Ms Rowling said: "If what I've written qualifies as an offence under the act, I look forward to being arrested."
Tory Russell Findlay said: "JK Rowling speaks for many women across Scotland." Some 300 people protested at the Scottish Parliament.
