BLACK African servicemen who died in the First World War are being commemorated for the first time.Princess Anne will be in South Africa on January 22 for the inauguration of the Cape Town Labour Corps Memorial.It honours 1,700 military labourers who served in the First World War in East Africa, and who have no known grave.It is thought up to 100,000 South African labourers died while serving in non-combat roles as British forces fought for former colonial territories.Military labourers did dangerous, gruelling work as porters, stevedores, wagon drivers and railway workers.Their memorial is part of a restorative programme for occasions when the Imperial War Graves Commission treated some ethnic groups differently from Europeans. Each of the 1,700 people commemorated is represented by an African hardwood post, with their details recorded.One of the men named is Magwayi Maliwa. His greatgrandson Sidney Maliwa said: "It touched and moved my dad the most because he did not know his grandfather. It moved him. He was filled with tears."
