'Modest and charming Normandy vet dies, 98

ONE of our last Normandy veterans has been hailed as a charming hero who was “always modest” about his exploits after dying aged 98.

Peter English was 19 when he landed on Gold Beach after D-Day and later said: “It was a difficult time but I was not involved in any death or glory incidents. I just remember being shouted at and told to keep my head down.”

He made several visits to France and Holland with his fellow Normandy veterans later in life.

But daughter Joy Harrison said Peter was “always modest” about his role in kicking off the liberation of Nazi-occupied France in June 1944.
