THE NHS has launched the world's first mass rollout of artificial pancreases for diabetics.
The hybrid closed loop system uses a sensor implanted under the skin to send blood sugar readings to a separate device such as a mobile phone, or directly to an insulin pump.
Tens of thousands of type 1 diabetes patients across England, including under-18s, will be eligible.
It means they will no longer have to inject insulin. Nationwide rollout of the technology was agreed yesterday after a pilot scheme of 835 patients.
One was Gemma Lavery, 38, of Plymouth, Devon, who said: "I can have a full night's sleep without worrying about regular low glucose levels hindering my morning routine."
Les Watson, 64, of West Devon, said: "The user interface is clean, clear and straightforward to grasp."
Dr Clare Hambling, NHS England director for diabetes, said: "This transformative technology holds the power to redefine the lives of those with type 1 diabetes."
The NHS is planning a five-year rollout of the device but has not yet released exact eligibility criteria.
