ERRORS are still being made with some state pension claims, according to a former pensions minister.The Department for Work and Pensions has been undertaking a correction exercise to fix previous payment errors.A Public Accounts Committee report in December last year stated that the DWP estimated some 210,000 people may have been underpaid a total of £1.3billion. In March this year the DWP said that between January 11, 2021 and February 29, 2024, the process had identified 97,016 underpayments, owed a total of £571.6million.But Sir Steve Webb, a partner at pension consultants LCP, says he has found new cases where incorrect information was given. This involved people claiming the new state pension who were already widowed when retiring.He had been contacted by four people who had not been awarded any inherited state pension and had been told that they were not entitled.This was incorrect. An increased amount was arranged and arrears have been paid, in two cases £2,000 a year. Sir Steve said: "You would hope that DWP would be making sure that new claims are handled correctly. We have found evidence that this is not the case." A DWP spokesman said: "Delays can occur when not all information is provided. Once we have necessary documentation, we will then revise the claim as soon as possible."
