KEIR Starmer was last night celebrating a seismic by-election victory that puts Labour on course for a major comeback in Scotland.
Raising the odds of a majority Labour government at the next general election, the party scored a decisive win over runners-up the SNP with a landslide win in Rutherglen and Hamilton West.
Labour's Michael Shanks secured 17,845 votes, more than doubling the total of the SNP's Katy Loudon in a massive swing of 20.4%.
The Scottish Tories had a humiliating result, with candidate Thomas Kerr losing his deposit after failing to win more than 5% of the vote share.
Thursday's by-election in the seat just outside Glasgow was called after former SNP MP Margaret Ferrier was ousted by constituents for breaking Covid rules.
