Seven migrants in space 'width of a human chest

A DRIVER has been jailed for 10 years for smuggling migrants into the country in a tiny compartment hidden inside a van.

Seven people were discovered screaming for help as they struggled to breathe in the vehicle during a cross-Channel ferry voyage.

Alerted by their cries, ship's crew used an axe to free the migrants from the cramped space, described as "the width of a human chest".

Two were unconscious. One man suffered a stroke after he was taken to hospital, while another had a suspected heart attack. A woman was left with acute kidney injury.
