Some 29.3 million trips will be made by motorists to see friends and family in the run-up to Christmas the most since 2013.
Nearly half of these, 14.3 million, will be crammed into this weekend, the RAC and transport analysts INRIX estimate.
They said drivers should try to avoid travelling on major roads between 10am and 3pm.
