OBESITY rates have doubled since 1990, with 17 million Britons now falling into this category.
A report in The Lancet also shows the number of obese people globally surpassed one billion in 2022.
The World Health Organisation said food and drink manufacturing industries must be held to account for the impact of their products.
The UK's female obesity rate rose from 13.8% in 1990 to 28.3% in 2022.
For men it rose from 10.7% to 26.9%.
Among children and adolescents the rate jumped from 4.7% to 10.1% for girls and 4.3% to 12.4% for boys.
