CRISIS-HIT Thames Water has warned its ageing assets pose "a risk to public safety" and the environment.Britain's biggest water company has admitted it has £19billion worth of crumbling pipes, sewage plants and other infrastructure.The firm says they are in a "poor" or "failed" condition, or are "no longer capable of reliably performing their function".This means more than 37,500 basement properties in London are at risk of "rapid flooding".In a report, Thames also revealed there are concerns about a parasite at four large processing plants that can cause diarrhoea. The firm warns that at the current rate, it will take 500 years to replace its ageing sewers, and 167 years to upgrade its pipes.Thames, which has £14.7bn of debt, wants to hike water bills over the next five years to help speed up the work. A spokesman said: "Our proposed level of investment is more than double the level of investment being made in the current five-year regulatory period."We will do more than ever to support customers by introducing an improved social tariff for those who struggle to pay their bills." The Government has been on notice for a temporary re-nationalisation of the firm.
