JOE ROOT says the players have let down captain Jos Buttler but he is the man to carry on leading England.

England face Australia here tomorrow at a World Cup where they have just one win and are bottom of the table.

Root has been there as a skipper when things have not gone well on tours, such as the 2017-18 or 2021-22 Ashes, both of which were lost 4-0.

He has an idea of how Buttler must be feeling and as a player is desperate to make amends.

"It hurts where we are now," said Root. "I look at Jos and I feel like as players we've let him down as captain.
