A MARRIED couple who met 80 years ago at a cocktail bar have both toasted their 100th birthdays together.Peter and Peggie Taylor tied the knot 78 years ago after the chance encounter on a night out in 1944.And now the husband and wife have marked becoming centenarians after Peter turned 100 on April 11 and Peggie on August 26.Peter admitted sharing such an incredible milestone had been a "quite emotional time", with 14 of their 17 great-grandchildren celebrating with them. He said:"We have had a tremendously happy few weeks celebrating with family, friends and neighbours." The Taylors, who are still both in good health, attribute their longevity to a "life full of simple joys and mutual respect".They are one of Britain's oldest couples but are pipped to the post by Dorothy Walter, 103, and husband Tim, 102, of Wingham, Kent, who married 81 years ago. Peter and Peggie have lived in Crewe, Cheshire, from childhood after their families moved to the town as employees of the railway.The pair first laid eyes on each other at Kettell's bar in Crewe during the Second World War.Peter flew Lancaster bombers in the aircrew and Peggie was a land girl in the Women's Land Army.Peter was then headteacher of Wistaston Green Primary School before retiring and is life president of South West Cheshire Scouts.
