WE MAY not have found out what happened on that fishing trip but 12.3million tuned in to see Nessa and Smithy find their happily ever after on Gavin & Stacey.
And incredibly in the age of streaming and endless social media, the finale of the BBC sitcom was the most-watched show on Christmas Day since 2008, the year after Gavin & Stacey's first series.
Writers James Corden and Ruth Jones delivered in all departments, with fans alternating between tears and laughter in every scene.
James posted a photo of him and Ruth on Instagram just before the show aired, saying: "We had to be together to watch tonight... It has been the greatest privilege making this show over the past 17 years."
