ENERGY customers are being ripped off as &pound;1.3billion is added to bills to cover bad debts, critics claim.
Watchdog Ofgem has allowed the money to be included in bills to supposedly shield suppliers from big losses.
But campaigners say it means energy firms are instead boosting their profits while failing to help those unable to pay.
The &pound;1.3billion of charges will apply from next month.
The added cost works out at &pound;28 a year for the average customer but is as higher as &pound;129 for those who&nbsp;pay their bill every three months by cash or cheque.
Fiona Waters, spokeswoman for the Warm This Winter campaign, said: "These additional costs look like&nbsp;they do nothing to reduce the debt of ordinary people but instead helps energy companies pursue those who can't pay.
"It's yet another outrageous rip-off caused by our broken system, where ordinary people are expected to foot the bill while energy giants&nbsp;bank billions."
Ofgem have been contacted for comment.
