DONALD Trump arrived for the first day of his fraud trial to hear that he had repeatedly lied to secure better loan and insurance terms.
New York Attorney General Letitia James is accusing the ex-president of inflating his assets by as much as &pound;3billion.
If he loses, he could be forced to pay $250million (&pound;206million) in penalties.
Kevin Wallace, a lawyer in James' team, told the court: "They were lying, year after year after year." Trump looked ahead, away from a screen showing the details.
As he arrived in court yesterday, he said: "It's a sham. My financial statements are phenomenal."
And his lawyer, Christopher Kise, said: "He has made a fortune being right about real estate investments." Among the allegations is he claimed his Trump Tower penthouse was nearly three times its actual size, and worth &pound;270million.
Along with the cash penalty, James is seeking a ban on Trump doing business in New York. He could have to give up properties, including Trump Tower.
Trump, the Republican front-runner for next year's election, denies wrongdoing.
The case, before Judge Arthur Engoron, could last until December.
