89 THREATS

RUSSIANS cutting undersea cables, rogue drones disrupting flights and the assassination of a high-profile figure are among 89 threats now facing Britain, a report warns today.

The National Risk Register outlined key threats to the UK's safety and security, which also included the collapse of a social care provider, a cyber assault crippling transport, and an attack on a NATO ally, triggering our obligation to go to its aid.

Matt Collins, the UK's deputy national security advisor, said: "A comprehensive understanding of the risks we face is critical to keeping the UK safe.

"This edition of the NRR, based on the Government's internal, classified risk assessment, offers even more detail on the potential scenarios, response and recovery options."

As well as terrorism and similar threats, experts are increasingly worried about Kremlin submarines targeting the underwater fibre optic connections linking Britain to the US.
