The family of a toddler trapped in hospital have been told she desperately needs a heart transplant before she can go home.
Aalayah Stewart has spent 10 months in Newcastle's Freeman Hospital where she has been fitted with a mechanical pump called a Berlin heart which is carrying out the function of her failed organ.
The three-year-old from Newarthill, near Motherwell, requires round-the-clock care and can't leave the facility until she has a successful transplant operation.
The brave youngster first fell ill in December 2022 after she developed a common virus called respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Doctors then diagnosed Aalayah with cardiomyopathy - a disorder that affects the heart muscles.
Aalayah initially appeared to bounce back, but suffered a devastating setback last March when she went into cardiac arrest.
She was taken to Freeman Hospital from the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow by police escort, and specialists fitted the mechanical heart.
Dad Thomas, 42, told the Record: "Aalayah's heart is broken and she needs a new one.
"She won't be able to come home until she does. We feel like our hearts are broken too.
"Our girl is incredible, she performs miracles every day.
"What she has been through is inspiring to us all. But her family is missing her so much.
