Figures out yesterday from Public Health Scotland show that at the end of last year 5029 people had been referred for a problem use of alcohol - a drop of 5.5 per cent from June 2021 when there were 6167. But the most recent figure for alcohol-related deaths showed a five per cent rise, to 1245.
Pressure group Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems demanded "more ambition" to reduce deaths.
Dr Alastair MacGilchrist, chair of the expert clinician partnership, said: "The number of people with alcohol problems accessing treatment has significantly decreased yet there has been no corresponding decrease in alcohol harms and deaths.
"In the last two years, the number dying as a direct result of an alcohol problem has significantly increased. It is clear, therefore, that there is a large group of people who are not accessing these much-needed services. It is essential we improve services by increasing accessibility and reducing the societal stigma.
"There needs to be clear ambition that reducing the current crisis is possible.
"It is time the Scottish Government took urgent action to ensure the provision of alcohol services that adequately meet the needs of people with alcohol problems."
