Officers in at least 10 vehicles rushed to Broughton Place in Coatbridge's Shawhead after reports that a dangerous dog was on the loose.
Local reports suggested a seven-month-old XL bully was involved and it's believed the dog slipped its muzzle.
It is unclear if anyone was injured but an ambulance was at the scene.
A vet was called to assist officers. One resident said: "The vet arrived and was there with him. It's a sad situation. The police said the last thing they want to do is shoot him but it's for safety precautions."
