FOR 300 years it has stood as an icon of the Great British countryside, but the Sycamore Gap tree has now been felled in an act of vandalism.
Images emerged yesterday of it lying on the ground, appearing to have been chopped down by a chainsaw.
Police last night arrested a boy aged 16 on suspicion of criminal damage.
The 70ft tall sycamore featured in 1991 film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves which starred Kevin Costner as the outlaw.
