CALLS to scrap the "cruel" bedroom tax have been made after figures showed nearly 100,000 households in Scotland had benefits reduced last year.
Some 97,425 Scottish households had Universal Credit or Housing Benefit payments reduced because of the policy in 2022, SNP-commissioned analysis showed. The Scottish&nbsp;Government tops up benefits for Scots who lose money due to the tax.
Scottish households affected lost an average of &pound;786.84 in Housing Benefit and &pound;709.08 in UC.
The bedroom tax is the reduction of benefits for those renting from a council or housing association with a spare bedroom. It was introduced&nbsp;by the Tory-Lib Dem coalition in 2013.
The SNP said the analysis showed a third of housing benefit claimants in Scotland having their benefits reduced compared to 16 per cent in England.
Some 29 per cent of Scottish Universal Credit claimants had their benefits reduced, compared to 18 per cent of claimants in England. SNP social&nbsp;justice spokesperson David Linden said: "Sir Keir Starmer must admit whether the pro-Brexit Labour Party is secretly planning to keep the Tory bedroom tax.
"It's clearer by the day the SNP is the only party offering real change with independence and real help with the cost of living.
The UK Government was asked for comment.
