Glasgow University researchers found mitoglitazone prevented cancer stem cells from absorbing the glucose they need as fuel.
CML chronic myeloid leukemia - cells use glucose to grow and arm themselves against cancer treatments.
The same drug has been tested&nbsp;in clinical trials for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.
Study lead author Professor Vignir Helgason said: "Research has shown cancer cells often rely on increased uptake of specific nutrients - sugar, proteins or fats&nbsp;to survive. This suggests that if we can use drugs to target that nutrient uptake, it may in turn improve cancer treatments."
Co-author Dr Kevin Rattigan added: "Our study has revealed that the addiction to glucose is an achilles heel for the CML stem cells that are resistant to current therapies." Sarah McDonald, of&nbsp;Blood Cancer UK, said: "Blood cancer is the UK's third biggest cancer killer and receiving a blood cancer diagnosis can be life changing.
"While there is currently no cure for this form of cancer research findings like these give the 750 people diagnosed with CML each year in the UK hope."
