Home Secretary's job hangs by thread amid the backlash

SUELLA Braverman's job was hanging by a thread as key Cabinet colleagues refused to back her, and Rishi Sunak faced calls to sack her, with Tories admitting they had faced a backlash from the public.

Unless the Prime Minister ditches his Home Secretary over her unauthorised attack on police chiefs ahead of today's march, she is expected to be by his side at the Cenotaph for tomorrow's Remembrance Sunday ceremony.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt was among those who distanced himself from her claim that police "play favourites", taking a tougher line against far-right demonstrations than the pro-Palestine peace protests, which she likened to marches in Northern Ireland.

Mr Hunt told reporters: "As many other Cabinet ministers have said, the words she used are not words that I myself would have used.
